Biography

Representative Tom Kuhn

Thomas E. Kuhn is a Republican member of the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 57th House District since his election in November 2022. He was reelected in 2024. The district encompasses portions of Macomb and Oakland counties, including areas of Sterling Heights, Troy, and Madison Heights.

Kuhn was born on December 25, 1950, in Detroit and is married to Sherry. He has three children: Chris Cormier, Kaye Chervenak, and Robert Kuhn. He is a Methodist and has maintained strong community ties throughout his career, including coaching youth sports and serving on the board of youth baseball organizations.

Education

Kuhn earned his high school diploma from Lahser High School. He completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan in 1973, followed by a master's degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 1975. He earned a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 1985 and a Juris Doctor from Detroit College of Law , also in 1985. He is admitted to practice law in the Eastern District of Michigan, Western District of Michigan, and the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Political Experience

Before his election to the state legislature, Kuhn built an extensive record of public service. He practiced law for more than 35 years and served on the Royal Oak City Commission for 12 years. He spent 12 years on the Oakland Community College Board of Trustees, including two years as Board Chair. Most recently, he served as an Oakland County commissioner for four years, representing residents of Troy, Rochester Hills, and Auburn Hills.

In the state House, Kuhn serves on the House Appropriations committee, which shapes the state budget. He serves as chair of the general government subcommittee and vice chair of the public health subcommittee, with additional roles on the higher education and community colleges subcommittee and the Medicaid and behavioral health subcommittee. He has authored legislation focused on bringing transparency, accountability, and efficiency to Michigan's budget process, including measures to ensure legislators have adequate time to review bills before voting and to enhance public input in the budgeting process.
