Biography
Donavan McKinney is a Democratic State Representative for Michigan's 11th House District, serving northeast Detroit and parts of Warren. Born June 16, 1992, in Detroit, he is married to Shaunte' Wilcher-McKinney and has one son, Donavan McKinney II. Currently in his second term , his priorities include expanding health care access, improving education, reforming criminal justice, protecting union and worker rights, and addressing climate change. Notable roles include past service on the House Appropriations Committee as majority vice chair of subcommittees on Corrections and Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; appointment to Michigan's first Environmental Justice Council by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer; and leadership in initiatives like the $2 million Water Restart Grant Program. He has also served on boards for Bridging Communities Inc., Southeast Michigan Jobs with Justice, and The McKinney Foundation.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Detroit Renaissance High School ; earned a B.A. in Public Policy from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor's Gerald R. Ford School .
- Political Experience: Served as Legislative Director in the Michigan House; national political director for Climate Power; political and coalition work for SEIU Healthcare Michigan; Executive Committee for the Michigan Democratic Party and 14th Congressional District Democratic Party; 2019 graduate of Front Line Leaders Academy.
- Community and Professional Roles: Community engagement with Community Development Advocates of Detroit ; admissions and student life at Wayne County Community College District ; current board service with Bridging Communities Inc. and Southeast Michigan Jobs with Justice; involved with Young Minds in Transition.
