Treat all voters equally in taxpayer funded elections

In Nevada, taxpayers fund elections, yet many primaries are closed to non-Democrats and non-Republicans, leaving voters unrepresented. This petition calls for amending the Nevada Constitution to require all voters to participate equally in every election, without forcing affiliation to private parties. If parties wish nominating conventions, they may fund them themselves. All voters deserve equal rights and representation.

In Nevada, funds to run our elections come from taxpayers, yet most of our primary elections are closed to voters who are not registered as a Democrat or a Republican.

This means taxes fund elections, yet not all voters receive representation through those elections.  This is fundamentally wrong and goes against the rallying cry that started our nation: No taxation without representation.

All taxpayer funded elections must be open to all voters.  No one should be forced to join a private political organization to exercise her or his right to vote.

This proposal, therefore, recommends amending the Nevada Constitution to require state officials to allow all voters to vote in every election equally.  If the political parties would like to nominate candidates, the parties are free to pay for their own nominating conventions.

Taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize these private organizations, and all voters must be treated equally under the law.
