Evelina Ortega was born in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. She attended the University of New Mexico and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Political Science. Ortega worked as a teacher in Sandoval County before running for office. She served on the Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education from 2011 to 2016.
