Biography

John Langston Kuempel is a Republican who served as the state representative for Texas House District 44 from December 30, 2010, to January 14, 2025. He won a special election to succeed his father, Edmund Kuempel, and held the seat through multiple terms, including strong general election victories . Notable achievements include serving as Chairman of the Higher Education Committee, membership on the Environmental Regulation and House Administration Committees, and co-chairing the Environmental Flows Advisory Group in 2022. He received the 2011 Legislative Champion Award from the Foundation Appraisers Coalition of Texas for reforming appraisal management companies and has been honored as a “Champion of Free Enterprise” by the Texas Association of Business. Kuempel worked as a salesman at Commercial Metals Company in Seguin and resides there with his wife Michelle and two children. He lost a 2024 Republican primary runoff to Alan Schoolcraft .

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Graduated from Seguin High School, where he played football and baseball; walk-on member of the University of Texas football team; earned a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin.
  • Political Experience: Elected in 2010 special election ; served seven terms until 2025; focused on border security, veterans affairs, energy policy , and environmental regulation. Faced local Republican censure for votes including support for Ken Paxton's impeachment and opposition to school choice funding.
