Biography
Tonya Pfaff is a Democratic State Representative for Indiana House District 43, which includes portions of Vigo County such as Terre Haute, West Terre Haute, and Seelyville. First elected on November 6, 2018, she serves as Ranking Minority Member on the Elections and Apportionment Committee , and is a member of the Ways and Means and Education Committees.
Tonya Pfaff, a lifelong resident of Terre Haute, Indiana, is the only daughter of Nancy and Fred Nation, growing up with three brothers in a competitive family emphasizing academics, sports, and community service. Her mother, a teacher at St. Ann School where Tonya attended elementary school, inspired her teaching career. She married Chris Pfaff, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, in 1994; they have four children: Griffin , Anne , Greta , and Kate . Pfaff's legislative priorities include strengthening public education in Indiana and promoting economic development in her district.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in mathematics and secondary education from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College ; master's degree in educational administration, curriculum, and supervision from the University of Oklahoma. Taught English for one year in Tajimi, Japan .
- Professional Experience: Math teacher for over 30 years in Vigo County—3 years at Terre Haute South Vigo, 15 years at West Vigo High School, and 14+ years at Terre Haute North Vigo—while also coaching.
- Political Experience: Elected to Indiana House District 43 in 2018 and serving continuously since 2019; key committee roles include budget oversight on Ways and Means, education policy, and leadership on elections and rural development.
