Margaret Wood Hassan was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1958. She earned her B.A. in history from Brown University in 1980. Hassan served as a member of the New Hampshire State Senate from 2004 to 2010. In 2012, she was elected Governor of New Hampshire. As Governor, Hassan focused on expanding access to public education and making higher education more affordable. In 2016, Hassan ran for the U.S. Senate. She defeated incumbent Senator Kelly Ayotte by just 1,017 votes. Hassan serves on the Senate Committees on Commerce, Science and Transportation; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Special Committee on Aging.read less
