Biography

Sherrod Brown is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as U.S. Senator from Ohio from 2007 to 2025. Born on November 9, 1952, in Mansfield, Ohio, he is known as a labor-oriented populist advocating for workers' rights, economic fairness, and fair trade.

Education

Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian studies from Yale University in 1974. He later received a Master of Arts in education and a Master of Public Administration from Ohio State University, where he also taught at the Mansfield campus.

Political Experience

Brown began his career in 1975 as a state representative in the Ohio House, becoming the youngest elected at the time, and served until 1982. He was Ohio's 47th Secretary of State from 1983 to 1991. From 1993 to 2007, he represented Ohio's 13th congressional district in the U.S. House. Elected to the Senate in 2006, defeating incumbent Mike DeWine, he won reelection in 2012 and 2018, but lost in 2024.

Notable achievements include chairing the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, where he helped pass Wall Street reform creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He supported healthcare for coal miners, the Farm Bill for water quality and farmers, Obama's Affordable Care Act, and convened conferences on higher education and job training.
