Biography

Patricia Lynn Murray, born on October 11, 1950, in Bothell, Washington, is a Democratic U.S. Senator representing Washington State. She has served in the Senate since 1993, making her the state's senior senator. Murray holds the distinction of being the first woman to serve as President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, a position she held from 2023 to 2025. She is also the longest-serving female senator in U.S. history.

Raised in a family of seven children, Murray's father, a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, managed a local five-and-dime store. When he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, her mother entered the workforce to support the family. Murray's early experiences with her family's financial struggles influenced her commitment to public service and advocacy for social programs.

Education and Political Experience

• Education: Murray earned a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Washington State University in 1972.

• Political Experience:

  • Local Involvement: After successfully leading a grassroots campaign to save a local preschool program, Murray served on the Shoreline School Board from 1985 to 1989.
  • Washington State Senate: Elected in 1988, she served one term before running for the U.S. Senate.
  • U.S. Senate: First elected in 1992, Murray has been re-elected five times, most recently in 2022. She has held several leadership positions, including Chair of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, and Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. In 2023, she became the first woman to serve as President pro tempore of the Senate.

Throughout her career, Senator Murray has been a staunch advocate for veterans' affairs, education reform, healthcare access, and women's rights. She played a pivotal role in negotiating the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013 and has consistently worked to address issues such as child care, paid leave, reproductive rights, and climate action.
