Arthur Lyle Washut was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating with a degree in business administration in 1974. Washut was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He achieved the rank of major before he retired. Later, Washut founded and became president of Washut Financial Services.
