HELP Copays Act
Expands Title XXVII PHSA aid to cover health-plan cost-sharing (deductibles, copays, coinsurance), lowering enrollees’ out-of-pocket costs and improving affordability.
Nick LaLota, born on June 23, 1978, in Bay Shore, New York, is a Republican politician serving as the U.S. Representative for New York's 1st Congressional District since January 2023. Raised in a family dedicated to public service—his father was a Nassau County Police Officer, and his grandfathers served in the NYPD—LaLota was inspired to pursue a career in the military and public service. He attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 2000, and served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. During his service, he completed three overseas deployments to 20 countries and was awarded a Joint Service Commendation Medal for his contributions to the Global War on Terrorism.
After his military service, LaLota returned to Long Island and continued his commitment to public service. He was appointed to the Amityville Board of Trustees in 2013, where he focused on reducing the tax burden and improving village services. He also served as Commissioner of the Suffolk County Board of Elections from 2015 to 2021, working to enhance the integrity of the electoral process. In 2022, he became Chief of Staff to the Suffolk County Legislature, overseeing a $3.7 billion budget and addressing environmental protection and municipal services.
In Congress, LaLota has been an advocate for Long Islanders, focusing on issues such as border security, supporting law enforcement, and reducing the cost of living. He has introduced legislation to protect the Long Island Sound and preserve Plum Island, securing over $150 million in federal funding for critical Suffolk County infrastructure projects.
LaLota is married to his high school sweetheart, Kaylie, a physical education teacher at Northport High School. Together, they are raising three daughters in Amityville, New York.
