ABOUT

Mark R. Warner was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1954. He earned his B.A. from George Washington University in 1977 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1980. After graduating law school, Warner served on the staff of U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd from 1980-1985. He co-founded the cellular phone company Nextel in the early 1990s and later became an early investor in Nextel. Warner was the Virginia Democratic Party chair from 1993 to 1995. In 1996 he was elected to serve as Virginia’s 69th governor. As governor from 2002 to 2006, Warner worked on fiscal reforms that resulted in budget surpluses. He was considered a potential vice presidential running mate of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004. In 2008, Warner defeated another former Virginia governor, Republican Jim Gilmore, to claim the seat held by the retiring John Warner (no relation). He serves on the Banking, Budget, Finance and Intelligence Committees.read less
