Thomas R. Carper was born January 23, 1947 in Beckley, West Virginia where he grew up. After college graduation Carper served as a Naval Flight Officer for five years during the Vietnam War. In 1976 Carper was elected to the Delaware House of Representatives where he served until 1982 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served Delaware as the state’s Representative until 1993. From 1993 to 2001 Carper served as Delaware’s Governor. In 2001, Carper was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he continues to serve today. Throughout his public service career, Carper has been guided by the view that "public policy matters and public service is a noble calling."read less
