Biography
Debbie Stabenow , a Democrat, served as the first woman to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2025. Born on April 29, 1950, in Gladwin, Michigan, and raised in Clare, she retired at the end of her term in 2025 after announcing in 2023 that she would not seek reelection; her seat was succeeded by Democrat Elissa Slotkin. Notable achievements include defeating incumbent Republican Spencer Abraham in 2000 by focusing on healthcare, championing children's issues like creating Michigan's Children's Trust Fund and domestic violence protections, securing infrastructure funding post-Flint water crisis, authoring the first federal ban on oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes, and holding key Senate roles on committees such as Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, Budget, and Aging, as well as third-ranking Democratic leadership.
