ABOUT
Thomas Chittenden was born in East Guilford, Connecticut, and later moved to Vermont. He established himself as a farmer and surveyor. In 1777, Chittenden participated in framing the constitution of what was then the independent Vermont Republic. He was elected president that same year and served until 1789 and again from 1790 until his death in 1797. Chittenden guided Vermont through the challenging years of its independence and played a key role in Vermont's negotiations to enter the union as the 14th state. He favored strong local government as opposed to a strong national government.read less
