Biography

Representative Martin LaLonde

Martin LaLonde was born in Lynwood, California, and raised in Alpena, Michigan, where he maintains family ties as a fourth-generation member of the LeRoy Hunting Club. He moved to South Burlington, Vermont, in the summer of 2007 with his wife Anne and two sons.

Beyond his legislative work, LaLonde has been actively involved in his community. He served on the South Burlington School Board from 2010 to 2021 and has held positions on the Board of Vermont Suzuki Violins, the South Burlington Form Based Code committee, and the Board of the Vermont School Board Association. He is also a dedicated watercolor artist and past President of the Vermont Watercolor Society.

Education

LaLonde received his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Michigan in 1986 and attended Alpena Community College. He earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1993.

Political Experience

LaLonde has served in the Vermont House of Representatives since 2014, representing Chittenden-12. He currently holds several significant positions, including Chair of the House Committee on Judiciary, Chair of the House Ethics Panel, and Clerk of the Joint Legislative Justice Oversight Committee. He also serves on the Judicial Rules Committee and the Vermont Sentencing Commission.

Prior to his legislative career, LaLonde worked as a trial attorney at the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., for approximately 12 to 13 years beginning in 1995. During this tenure, he represented federal agencies in lawsuits involving federal environmental and land management statutes, Indian tribal lands and resources, and matters related to the National Environmental Policy Act and federal royalties on minerals and energy resources.
