Sylvia Garcia was born on September 6, 1950 in Palito Blanco, Texas to parents who were migrant farm workers. She attended Texas Woman's University on a scholarship and graduated with a degree in social work. After college, Garcia co-founded an advocacy group called Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together (MATT). She also became the controller of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials before deciding to run for public office herself. In 1992, Garcia was elected City Controller in Houston, becoming the first woman to hold citywide office. She went on to serve three terms before being elected to the Texas Senate in 2005. During her time as a legislator, Garcia focused on education, healthcare and economic development issues.read less
