Biography
Al Green is a Democratic Representative for Texas's 9th Congressional District, which spans southwest Houston, Texas. Born on September 1, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he is a veteran civil rights advocate who has served in the U.S. House since 2005, currently in his eleventh term as of 2025. Notable achievements include introducing articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump in 2018 and 2019, securing over $100 million in federal funding for community projects in his district , and leadership roles such as Assistant Whip in the Democratic Party, Chair of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and Ranking Member on related subcommittees. He previously served as President of the Houston NAACP for about 10 years and co-founded the Black and Brown Coalition.
Education
Green attended Florida A&M University, Howard University, and Tuskegee Institute without earning an undergraduate degree. He received his Juris Doctor from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in 1973 or 1974.
Political Experience
After law school, Green co-founded the law firm Green, Wilson, Dewberry, and Fitch and served as Justice of the Peace in Harris County, Texas, from 1977 to 2004 . Elected to Congress in 2004, he serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the Homeland Security Committee . He is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
