Biography
Gabriel Acevero is a Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing District 39 in Montgomery County, which includes parts of Gaithersburg, Germantown, Clarksburg, Montgomery Village, and Washington Grove. Born October 23, 1990, in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, he is a Trinidadian-American organizer, activist, and politician who immigrated to Maryland with his family in 2007. Elected in 2018 at age 28, he made history as the first openly gay Afro-Latino and one of the youngest members of the Maryland General Assembly. Notable achievements include organizing for marriage equality , the Maryland Dream Act , transgender equality, the Fight for $15 minimum wage increase in Montgomery County, and decarceration efforts; he also participated in Black Lives Matter protests during the 2015 Freddie Gray unrest and pushed for repealing Maryland's Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights. Acevero is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and currently serves as Chair of the Public Safety and Administration Subcommittee and Capital Budget Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee , Vice Chair of the Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus , and Secretary of the Maryland Legislative LGBTQ+ Caucus .
Education and Political Experience
Education: A.A. in International Relations from Montgomery College; B.A. in Political Science and Public Policy from University of Maryland, Baltimore County ; M.P.A. from Bowie State University.
Political Experience: Sworn into office January 9, 2019, using James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time. Serves on the House Appropriations Committee since 2019, including past roles on Health and Social Services and Public Safety and Administration . Member of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus , Latino Legislative Caucus, Montgomery County Delegation, and Maryland Legislative LGBTQ+ Caucus. Pre-office roles: Field Representative and Organizer for MCGEO ; Business Development Manager in commercial real estate; student activist; volunteer for political campaigns; President of Association of Black Democrats of Montgomery County; Fellow and Advisory Board member, Maryland New Leaders Council ; Director of Social Action, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Endorsed Bernie Sanders in 2020 primaries and urged "Uncommitted" votes in 2024 primaries.
