Gabe Amo (RI-1)

Biography

Gabe Amo is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District since November 13, 2023. Born on December 11, 1987, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he is the son of Ghanaian and Liberian immigrants. Amo's mother is a nurse, and his father owns a liquor store. His election marked a historic milestone as he became the first Black representative from Rhode Island in Congress.

Education

• Moses Brown School, Providence, Rhode Island: Graduated in 2005; served as President of the Student Senate and received the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s Civic Leadership Award.
• Wheaton College, Norton, Massachusetts: Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa; awarded a Truman Scholarship for public service.
• University of Oxford, Merton College: Master’s degree in Comparative Social Policy as a Marshall Scholar.

Political Experience

• White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs:
  • Obama Administration: Liaison to governors and state officials.
  • Biden Administration: Deputy Director and Special Assistant to the President, serving as the principal liaison to mayors and local elected officials.
• State Government:
  • Director of Public Engagement and Community Affairs for Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo; principal advisor on outreach to local governments, businesses, labor, faith groups, and communities of color.
• Congressional Service:
  • Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election on November 7, 2023, succeeding former Representative David Cicilline.
  • Serves on the House Committees on Budget, Foreign Affairs, and Science, Space, and Technology.
