Daynette Morikawa was born and raised in Makawao, Hawaii. She earned her BA in communications from Chaminade University in 2007 and her MA in communicology from University of Hawaii in 2009. Morikawa was selected from a field of three candidates by the Maui County Democratic Party to run in the special election to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Rep. Mele Carroll.
