Biography
Representative Yusuf Hakeem
Yusuf Hakeem is a Democratic member of the Tennessee House of Representatives representing District 28 in Hamilton County. First elected in November 2018, he has won re-election unopposed in the Democratic primaries and general elections in 2020 and 2022. Notable achievements include passing "Ban the Box" legislation on the Chattanooga City Council to remove criminal-history questions from job applications, leading a disparity study to boost minority business opportunities with the city, and partnering with Inspire Workforce Development for employment training. As a state representative, he serves as Deputy Whip for the State Democratic Caucus in the 111th General Assembly and sponsored House Bill 888 to ensure election integrity by requiring commissioners with family members running for office to recuse themselves 30 days prior. He is also a member of the United States Advisory for Trade Commission and a Deacon at Second Missionary Baptist Church.
