Yudelka Tapia is a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly representing the 86th Assembly District in the Bronx, which includes neighborhoods such as University Heights, Morris Heights, Mount Eden, Kingsbridge, Tremont, and Fordham. Born in the Dominican Republic, she immigrated to the West Bronx over 30 years ago, where she raised her four sons in New York City public schools. She has worked for 23 years as a Senior Auditor for the New York City Comptroller’s Office and has been active in community leadership, including serving as PTA President at Roosevelt High School, Executive Committee member for local 1407-DC 37 union, and local Democratic district leader. Elected in a 2021 special election following Victor Pichardo's resignation, she is currently serving her second term. Notable positions include membership in the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus, Legislative Women's Caucus, and Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force. She serves on committees such as Banks, Corporations, Authorities and Commissions, Economic Development, Job Creation, Commerce and Industry, Housing, Labor, and Mental Health.
Education and Political Experience
Tapia attended O&M University in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where she organized students against domestic violence and political corruption and served as President of the Unión Democrática de Mujeres. She holds a Master of Science in Urban Policy and Leadership from Hunter College. Prior to her Assembly role, she unsuccessfully ran for New York City Council District 14 in 2021. She has endorsed candidates including Kathy Hochul in the 2022 gubernatorial election and Andrew Cuomo in the 2025 New York City mayoral primary.
