Biography
Yasmin Trudeau is a Democratic State Senator representing Washington's 27th Legislative District, which includes parts of Tacoma and surrounding areas in Pierce County. First elected in 2021, her next election is in 2028. She resides in Tacoma and serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Law and Justice and Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, while also a member of the Senate Committee on Housing. Notable achievements include passing legislation to prohibit youth solitary confinement, enhance consumer and student loan protections, close wage theft loopholes, address unfair debt collection practices, and improve the state's Medicaid Fraud Program. As Tribal Affairs Manager for Attorney General Bob Ferguson, she advanced policies for better collaboration between Tribal Governments and state attorneys.
Education and Political Experience
Trudeau graduated from Henry Foss High School in 2002 and earned a law degree from Seattle University. Her early life involved overcoming poverty, violence, food insecurity, foster care, and homelessness as a teenager raised by a single mother who could not read or write. Politically, she served as Staff Counsel for the Senate Democratic Caucus and Legislative Assistant to Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. She was a licensed attorney, Statewide Legislative Director, and Tribal Affairs Manager in Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson's office.
