Yara Zokaie , Colorado House District 52
Yara Zokaie is a Democratic member of the Colorado House of Representatives for District 52 , assuming office on January 8, 2025. She is a tax attorney, the first Iranian-American lawmaker in Colorado, and co-founder of the Latino Coalition nonprofit advocating for marginalized communities.
Yara Zokaie is a first-generation Iranian-American from a working-class immigrant family. As a mother raising her children in Fort Collins, she has advocated for paid family and sick leave after her youngest son's NICU stay, rallying moms, meeting legislators, and knocking on doors. She co-founded the Latino Coalition to deliver COVID vaccinations, voter registration drives, and resources to underserved communities of color in Northern Colorado. Her priorities include strengthening public education, workers' rights, affordable housing and healthcare, climate action, rural hospital support, water and agriculture issues, and an equitable tax code. She serves on the House Judiciary and Finance Committees and commits to bipartisan compromise without compromising on at-risk groups.
Education and Political Experience
Zokaie graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law at age 23 as the youngest in her class, while working three jobs. She earned a master's in taxation on scholarship from a prestigious program. Her career includes practicing tax law, representing individuals and small businesses against the IRS and Colorado Department of Revenue. Prior to election in November 2024, she served as chief deputy assessor of Larimer County. This is her first elected office.
