Biography
Wick Thomas is a Democratic State Representative for Missouri's 19th District, covering parts of Jackson County including Kansas City's historic Northeast neighborhood, Sugar Creek, and Independence. They are the first trans/gender non-conforming elected official in Missouri and a longtime LGBTQ+ activist. Prior to elected office, Thomas worked in public service uplifting youth voices through roles such as Teen Services Librarian at the Kansas City Public Library, Manager of Teen Programs at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and community college faculty librarian. They own a historic arts business, maintain an urban homestead with a native garden, and volunteer for nonprofits, community cleanups, and little free libraries.
Notable achievements include founding the first public trans support group in the region, serving as an Equality Rider, founding EQUAL, and driving the creation of the Missouri Intersectional Equality Conference and Equality Caucus . Awards include “Mover and Shaker” from Library Journal, Best Activist from Pitch Magazine, Creating Change Award from the National LGBTQ Task Force, Keith Spare Leadership Award, and Building Bridges Award from UMKC LGBTQIA Resource Center.
Education and Political Experience
Education: BA in Communications from the University of Missouri-Kansas City ; Master of Library Science from Emporia State University.
Political Experience: Elected in 2024 as a Democrat to represent Missouri House District 19. Ran in 2020, focusing on advocacy against anti-LGBT legislation, fully funding schools and libraries, and addressing evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Active in Missourians for Constitutional Freedom and Greater Kansas City Women's Political Caucus; recognized as a Legislative Champion by PROMO.
