Biography
Wes Moore is the 63rd Governor of Maryland, a Democrat serving since January 18, 2023. He is Maryland's first Black governor and the third African American elected governor in U.S. history. Elected in 2022 with the highest number of individual votes in Maryland gubernatorial history, Moore ran alongside Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller on a "Leave No One Behind" agenda. As governor, he has prioritized reducing child poverty, investing in public education, public safety , economic growth , and crisis response, such as reopening the Port of Baltimore after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in just 11 weeks. He holds positions including Vice-Chair of the National Governors Association , States' Co-Chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission , and member of the Council of Governors .
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Johns Hopkins University, where he was the first Black Rhodes Scholar in its history and interned for former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke. As a Rhodes Scholar, he earned a Master's in international relations from Wolfson College, Oxford.
- Military and Early Career: Combat veteran and paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, deploying to Afghanistan in 2005 as a lieutenant. Served as a White House Fellow post-deployment, advising on national security and international relations. Worked as an investment banker and founded BridgeEdU, a Baltimore-based business to support underserved college students .
- Nonprofit and Writing: Bestselling author of books including The Other Wes Moore , Discovering Wes Moore , The Work , This Way Home , and Five Days . Served four years as CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, distributing over $600 million to fight poverty, including in Maryland.
- Political Entry: Announced gubernatorial candidacy in June 2021 with no prior elected experience; sworn in January 2023.
