Walt Blackman - Arizona House Representative

Walt Blackman is an American politician born in 1965/1966 and currently serves as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives representing District 7. He is a Republican and made history as the first Black Republican elected to the Arizona State Legislature.

Blackman was born in Portugal and is from Snowflake, Arizona. Before entering politics, he served 21 years in the United States Army, where he earned a Bronze Star for combat action while serving as a tank commander in Iraq.

Political Experience

Blackman was first elected in 2018 to succeed term-limited State Representative Brenda Barton, initially representing District 6. He served in the legislature from 2019 to 2023. Following redistricting, he ran for a third non-consecutive term and won the general election in November 2024, being sworn in on January 13, 2025, to represent the newly configured District 7, which contains more of Pinal County.

During his tenure, Blackman has served as Chairman of the Judiciary and Government Committees and has championed conservative priorities including pro-life initiatives, immigration reform, education funding, Second Amendment rights, limited government, fiscal responsibility, law and order, border security, and religious liberty. He has received the CPAC Conservative Legislator and Emerging Leaders Awards.

Notable Activities

Blackman has sponsored legislation including HB2062 regarding a Buffalo Soldiers Arizona territory monument and HB2063 concerning appropriations for independent correctional matters. Following the 2020 presidential election, he supported the "Stop the Steal" movement, which falsely claimed that Donald Trump won the election nationally and in Arizona.
