Biography
Vivian Davis Figures is a Democratic State Senator representing District 33 in the Alabama State Senate since 1997. Born on January 24, 1957, in Mobile, Alabama, she is a widow with three children and one stepchild, and serves as President/CEO of the Figures Legacy Education Foundation.
A trailblazer as the first African-American woman elected to the Senate from Mobile County and the second in Alabama state history, she succeeded her late husband, Senator Michael A. Figures. Notable achievements include serving as Minority Leader of the Alabama State Senate in 2013-2014—the first woman in that role—and becoming Alabama's first African-American woman Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in 2008, where she received 37% of the vote. She holds key committee positions such as Ranking Minority Member on the Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development Committee and member of the Judiciary and Education Policy Committees.
