Biography
Virgil Weigel
Virgil Weigel is a Democratic member of the Kansas House of Representatives, representing the 56th district in Topeka, Shawnee County. Born on February 25, 1953, in Hays, Kansas, Weigel is a Kansas native with deep roots in public service. He is married to Jeanette and has three children: Emily, Elizabeth, and Nolan, along with nine grandchildren.
Education
Weigel graduated from high school in 1971 and was inducted into the U.S. Army, where he completed basic combat training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and received advanced individual training as an armored crewman on main battle tanks, including the M-551 Sheridan armored reconnaissance vehicle.
After returning to Hays, he attended Fort Hays State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1982 and a Master's degree in Political Science in 1983.
Political Experience
Weigel has a distinguished career in law enforcement spanning over 28 years before his election to the state legislature. His professional background includes positions with the Hays Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, MTAA Airport Police, and the Kansas Department of Revenue/ABC, from which he retired in 2011 with more than 25 years of state service.
He assumed office in the Kansas House of Representatives on January 14, 2013, succeeding Annie Tietze. Currently, Weigel serves on multiple committees, including the Financial Institutions and Pensions Committee, and holds the ranking minority member position on the Veterans and Military Committee, as well as the Corrections and Juvenile Justice and Agricultural committees. He also works with high school students considering public service careers through the Dole Institute of Politics.
