Biography
Vernon G. Smith is a Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives, representing District 14 in Northwest Indiana, which includes portions of Lake County in Gary. He has served since 1990, following Earline Rogers' resignation to join the Indiana Senate, and previously served on the Gary City Council since 1972. Notable achievements include founding and serving as board president of the African-American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc.; past chair of the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males ; and founder and chair of the Gary City-Wide Festival Committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Froebel High School; earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctorate in Education from Indiana University; completed post-doctoral work at Indiana University and Purdue University.
- Professional Experience: Taught in Gary Public Schools ; assistant principal at Ivanhoe School ; principal at Nobel School ; principal at Williams School .
- Political Experience: Longtime Gary City Council member ; Indiana House Representative for District 14 , with involvement in authoring bills such as those establishing the Hoosier scam prevention board and addressing shared labor referendums.
