About

Tyrone A. Carter is a Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives, representing District 1, which includes portions of Southwest, West, and Central Detroit, as well as River Rouge and Ecorse. A former police officer and lifelong public servant from the district, he was first elected in 2018 for District 6, switched to District 1 after redistricting in 2022, and is currently serving his fourth term. Notable achievements include sponsoring the Clean Slate Act of 2021, securing first-time state funding for Sickle Cell research, reducing prisoner phone call costs by two-thirds, aiding unemployment navigation during COVID-19, and delivering over $1 billion to Detroit as Chair of the Detroit Caucus. He serves on committees such as Judiciary , Finance, and Regulatory Reform, and is a member of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus.

  • Early Career: Served 25 years with Wayne County Sheriff’s Office , rising to Executive Lieutenant and acting as union steward for equal pay and benefits; Assistant Director of Public Safety at Wayne County Community College District , transforming campus security into a licensed police department; Community Involvement Specialist at Southwestern High School ; small business owner.
  • Community Service: Led Original United Citizens of Southwest Detroit ; mentored youth via AmeriCorps Detroit Youth Service Corps at Wayne State University; board member for non-profits like Adult Well Being Services; organized college tours for high school students.
  • Political Experience: Elected to Michigan House in 2018; committees include Regulatory Reform, Judiciary, Criminal Justice, Corrections, Education, and Military & Veterans Affairs; running for Detroit City Council District 6.
