Biography
Tram Thi Ngoc Nguyen is a Democratic member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives representing the 18th Essex District, which includes parts of Andover, Boxford, North Andover, and Tewksbury. Born on June 22, 1986, she is a first-generation Vietnamese American immigrant, the first Vietnamese American woman elected to public office in Massachusetts, and the first Asian American woman to chair a House committee. She resides in Andover with her husband and two dogs. Nguyen was elected in 2018, flipping a historically Democratic seat from Republican control with a 54% majority.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a Bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law, and a Master in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School.
- Pre-Political Career: Worked as a legal aid attorney at Greater Boston Legal Services, advocating for domestic violence survivors, low-wage workers, veterans, seniors, and children; collaborated on legislation for racial and economic justice.
- Current Positions: Chair of the House Committee on Climate Action and Sustainability ; member of the Joint Committee on Financial Services.
- Previous Roles: Vice Chair of the House Committee on Steering, Policy, and Scheduling and the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development; Co-Chair of the Special Commission on Structural Racism in the Massachusetts Probation Service.
