Biography
Torrey N. Westrom is a Republican state senator representing District 12 in the Minnesota Senate, covering counties including Big Stone, Douglas , Grant, Pope, Stearns , Stevens, Swift, Traverse, and Wilkin. First elected to the Minnesota House at age 23 in 1996, he served there until 2012 before joining the Senate in 2013, with re-elections in 2016, 2020, and 2022. Born and raised in Willmar and Elbow Lake, he lost his vision at age 14 in a farm accident but persevered in high school wrestling, earning induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with the Medal of Courage Award in 2012. He is the first known blind member of the Minnesota Legislature and, in 2011, the first blind person to oversee U.S. state House debate as Speaker Pro Tempore. An attorney and family business owner in Alexandria with his wife Anna and three children, Westrom advocates for rural job creation, efficient government, private sector growth, value-added agriculture, and opportunities for people with disabilities.
