Biography
Senator Tony Luetkemeyer
Tony Luetkemeyer is a Republican state senator from Missouri's 34th Senatorial District, representing Buchanan and Platte counties. Born on September 21, 1983, he resides in Parkville, Missouri, and practices law as an attorney. He is a member of the United Methodist Church.
Luetkemeyer was first elected to the Missouri Senate on November 6, 2018, and was reelected to a second term on November 8, 2022. He currently serves as the Majority Floor Leader of the Missouri Senate, having previously held the positions of Majority Caucus Chairman and Majority Whip.
Education and Early Leadership
Luetkemeyer attended the University of Missouri, where he served as student body president, representing more than 21,000 undergraduates. During his tenure, he testified before the General Assembly on behalf of student issues, an experience he credits with shaping his advocacy skills.
Political Experience and Notable Achievements
Throughout his Senate career, Luetkemeyer has focused on public safety, tax reform, and reliable energy policy. Key accomplishments include:
Public Safety: He previously served as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and championed legislation to combat violent crime by ending the catch-and-release of dangerous felons. He led efforts to prevent Kansas City from reducing the police department's budget by over $42 million and sponsored bipartisan legislation to protect law enforcement officers, raise officer pay, and provide departments with recruitment and retention tools. Notably, he sponsored Missouri's Constitutional Amendment 4, which was approved twice by voters and requires Kansas City to allocate at least 25% of its general revenue to the police department.
Tax Reform: Luetkemeyer has been a steadfast advocate for lower taxes, sponsoring legislation to freeze property taxes on senior homes, eliminate income tax on Social Security and retirement benefits, and help pass the largest income tax cut in Missouri state history.
Recognition: He received the U.S. Term Limits Champion of Term Limits Award in 2019 and the Associated Students of the University of Missouri Legislator of the Year award in 2019.
