Biography
Tony Hwang is a Republican state senator representing Connecticut's 28th District, which includes the towns of Bethel, Easton, Fairfield, and Newtown. Serving his fifth term as of recent records, he has held leadership roles such as Chief Deputy Republican Leader and Ranking Member of the Aging, Transportation, Insurance and Real Estate Committees. He is the first Asian-Pacific American State Senator in Connecticut history and has been recognized for his work in community strengthening, youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Hwang lives in Fairfield with his wife, Grace, and their children, Christina and Peter. In March 2026, he announced he would not seek a seventh term amid a primary challenge.
Education and Political Experience
Hwang's commitment to public service began in 2005 when he won a seat on the Fairfield Representative Town Meeting following a local education issue. In 2008, he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives for the 134th District , focusing on fiscal responsibility, moderate social views, and community passion; he was re-elected in 2010 and 2012 with strong bipartisan support. He transitioned to the State Senate in 2014, becoming the first Asian-Pacific American in that role. As Assistant Republican Leader, he has collaborated across aisles on policies protecting vulnerable residents while opposing funding cuts, and sponsored bills on school choice, gender-specific sports teams, and housing-water supply balance.
