Tony Bisignano is the Iowa State Senator representing District 15 . Born on May 14, 1952, in Des Moines, Iowa, he is the son of an Italian immigrant and grew up in Des Moines’s Little Italy neighborhood. He has lived on the south side of Des Moines his entire life. Bisignano first ran for office at age 24 and worked for Polk County for 41 years, starting in environmental sanitation and restaurant inspection at age 21, later serving as policy adviser, project manager, and Human Resources director before retiring. He served seven years as president of his local AFSCME union. He and his wife, Kim, raised three children; after their son Nick died in a car accident as a teen, Bisignano founded the Nick Bisignano Foundation to promote responsible choices among young people. He is active in SouthSide Cares, Best Buddies of Iowa, and Special Olympics.
