Tommy John Schiavoni is an American politician representing the 1st District of the New York State Assembly since 2025. He represents part of Suffolk County on Long Island's East End, including the towns of Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island, Southold, and part of Brookhaven.
A lifelong resident of the East End, Schiavoni comes from a family with deep roots in the community. For three generations, his family operated a local plumbing and heating business in Sag Harbor, where he began working at age twelve. Growing up on construction sites with master tradesmen provided him with practical problem-solving skills that continue to shape his approach to governance today.
Beyond his political career, Schiavoni has been an active volunteer, serving as a member of the Sag Harbor Volunteer Fire Department.
Education
Schiavoni earned a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education in Social Studies from SUNY Cortland. While working full-time as an educator, he earned a Master's Degree from SUNY Stony Brook to further his career in secondary education.
Political Experience
Teaching Career:
Schiavoni worked as a high school social studies teacher in the Center Moriches School District from 1988 until his retirement in 2018, teaching Participation in Government, Economics, U.S. History, and Government.
Local Government Service:
- 2008: First appointed to the North Haven Village Zoning Board of Appeals
- 2014: Elected to the North Haven Village Board
- 2014–2017: Served on the Sag Harbor School Board of Education
- 2016: Appointed to the Southampton Town Zoning Board of Appeals
- 2017–2024: Served on the Southampton Town Council for just under two terms
State Assembly:
Elected to the New York State Assembly in November 2024, Schiavoni succeeded Fred Thiele. In the Assembly, he serves on five committees: Environmental Conservation, Local Governments, Agriculture, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, and Veterans' Affairs.
Notable Achievements:
On the Southampton Town Council, Schiavoni championed infrastructure and environmental initiatives, including establishing a new sewer district in the Riverside hamlet to support economic revitalization and protect the Peconic River. He also worked to ensure the safety of drinking water in Hampton Bays and advocated for improvements to volunteer firefighters' benefits and property tax exemptions.
