Biography
Thomas Richard Suozzi is an American Democratic Party representative currently serving New York's 3rd congressional district since 2024. Born August 31, 1962, he has devoted most of his adult life to public service, with a background trained as both an attorney and certified public accountant .
Suozzi previously represented New York's 3rd congressional district from 2017 to 2023 before returning to Congress in 2024. Before his congressional career, he served as mayor of his hometown Glen Cove for eight years and as Nassau County Executive for another eight years. He also unsuccessfully ran for Governor of New York twice, in 2006 and 2022.
Education and Professional Background
Suozzi trained as both an attorney and CPA. Prior to his elected offices, he worked as a litigator for Shearman & Sterling law firm, served as a law clerk to the Chief Judge of the Eastern District, and worked as an auditor for Arthur Andersen & Co. During his time away from elected office between 2010 and 2016, he served as a senior advisor to investment banking firm Lazard and as of counsel at Harris Beach law firm.
Political Experience
As Nassau County Executive from 2002 to 2009, Suozzi earned recognition for transforming the county from being rated "the worst-run county in the country" into a fiscal success story. He was named Governing Magazine's Public Official of the Year and was described as "the man who spearheaded Nassau County, New York's remarkable turnaround from the brink of fiscal disaster."
In Congress, Suozzi has served on the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means, with assignments on the Oversight and Tax subcommittees. He also serves as Co-Chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, composed of 25 Democrats and 25 Republicans who meet weekly to find common ground. In this role, he helped negotiate the historic Infrastructure and Jobs Act, which invested billions to improve New York's infrastructure.
Notable achievements include creating FixAlbany.com in 2004 to expose corruption in New York state politics, leading a state commission in 2007 that proposed the first property tax cap, and earning the New York State League of Conservation Voters' "Environmentalist of the Year" award in 2008.
