Biography
Representative Tom Stevens
Tom Stevens is a Democratic state representative from Vermont who has represented the Washington-Chittenden district since 2009. Born on June 25, 1961, in New Haven, Connecticut, Stevens moved to Waterbury, Vermont in 1996, where he currently resides with his wife Liz and three children: Kate, Augie, and Cormac.
Education
Stevens earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from Boston University, completing his degree in 1983.
Political Experience
Stevens has held several significant positions in local and state government:
- Vermont State House of Representatives : Represents District Washington-Chittenden
- Chair, Town of Waterbury Select Board
- President, Waterbury Village Trustees
- Vermont Democratic Party : Serves as Liaison to the House of Representatives and member of the Executive Committee
Beyond elected office, Stevens has demonstrated commitment to community development and social causes. He served as President of the Board of Trustees for Downstreet Housing and Community Development and received the Brenda Torpy Award for Support of Permanently Affordable Housing. He has also volunteered with local nonprofit boards, including The Children's Room and Revitalizing Waterbury. Currently, Stevens serves as Education Director at Waterbury Congregational Church.
Stevens has advocated for progressive policies including child care expansion, climate resiliency, affordable housing, and taxes on wealthy Vermonters.
