Biography
Tom Shipley is a Republican State Senator representing District 9 in the Iowa Senate. He is serving his third term and works as a farmer/legislator with a lifelong commitment to agriculture. Born and raised in Adams County, he is the fifth generation in his family involved in agriculture there. He has a small farming operation and cow herd in Nodaway, and serves on committees including Natural Resources and Environment , Agriculture, Appropriations, Education, Judiciary, and Transportation, as well as chairing the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee. Notable community service includes 18 years on the Villisca School Board, 22 years in the Villisca Volunteer Ambulance Service, and roles in the First Presbyterian Church as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. He has also held leadership positions in cattlemen's associations, including as Iowa membership co-chair.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Villisca High School in 1971; earned an A.A. from Iowa Western Community College in 1973; received a Bachelor’s of Science in agriculture education from Iowa State University in 1975.
- Professional Experience: Taught vocational agriculture at Fremont-Mills High School from 1975 to 1978; worked as a livestock production specialist for Land O’ Lakes, feed department manager at United Farmers Merc. Coop, and director of issues and policy management for the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Iowa Senate for District 9, serving since at least 2015 and currently in his third term.
