Biography
Tom Leatherwood is a Republican state representative for Tennessee House District 99 , first elected in November 2018 after winning a special general election following the Republican primary winner's passing. Born August 20, 1956, he is married to Melissa and has five children; he is a retired Register of Deeds and a Baptist. Notable achievements include serving as Vice Chair of the House Health Committee, and receiving awards such as the Archival Advancement Award from the Society of Tennessee Archivists, Bob James Public Servant Award from the Shelby County Republican Party, TSBA Legislative Award, and University of Memphis Public Servant Award. He has been a strong conservative voice, with service through the 111th-114th General Assemblies.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Germantown High School ; Bachelor of Science in Geology, University of Memphis ; Teaching Certification, Middle Tennessee State University .
- Early Career: Worked in the energy industry post-college, then backpacked through over 20 countries for 14 months; later taught at Millington Central High School for eight years.
- Political Roles: Previously Shelby County Register of Deeds; current committees include Elections & Campaign Finance Subcommittee, Health Committee , Health Subcommittee, Naming & Designating Committee, and State & Local Government Committee.
