Biography
Tom Kunse
Tom Kunse is a Republican politician representing Michigan's 100th House District, which encompasses Mecosta, Osceola, and parts of Lake and Clare counties. Born on November 10, 1970, in Pontiac, Michigan, Kunse moved to Clare with his family in 1972 and has maintained deep roots in the community throughout his life.
Kunse is married to Janet and has two adult children, Natalee and Cristian. He is a member of the Methodist faith and actively participates in his community through youth sports coaching, math tutoring, and officiating for USA Hockey and the Michigan High School Athletic Association basketball.
Education
Kunse attended Clare High School, graduating in 1989. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University and later completed a Master of Science in Nuclear Physics from Central Michigan University .
Political Experience
Kunse was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2022 and was reelected in 2024. Prior to his state legislative service, he served as a Grant Township Trustee in Clare County beginning in 2020.
In the House, Kunse serves as vice chair of the House Communications and Technology Committee and holds membership on the Agriculture, Education and Workforce, and Transportation and Infrastructure committees.
Before entering politics, Kunse was the owner and founder of Northern Dry Bulk, a specialized transportation company, which he established in 1994 and operated for 30 years before selling it in January 2024. During his tenure as a business owner, the company grew to employ over 50 workers.
