Biography
Tom Garrett
Tom Garrett is a Republican politician and attorney representing Virginia's 56th House District in the Virginia House of Delegates, a position he has held since January 10, 2024. Born on March 27, 1972, in Lilburn, Georgia, Garrett grew up in Louisa County, Virginia, with his parents Tom Garrett Sr. and Lois, and his sister Paige. He is a Protestant Christian and has three children: Sheridan, Laura, and Carolyn.
Garrett served in the United States Army from January 1995 to July 2000. He is married and maintains strong ties to Central Virginia, where he has dedicated much of his career to public service.
Education
Garrett graduated from Louisa County High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Richmond in 1994. He later obtained his law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law in 2003.
Political Experience
Garrett's political career includes several notable positions:
Louisa County Commonwealth's Attorney : Elected in 2007, he served four years enforcing laws and prosecuting criminals in the county.
Virginia State Senate : Garrett won a five-way primary for the Republican nomination for Virginia's 24th Senate District in 2011 and won the general election. He was awarded the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Freshman Legislative of the Year in 2012. During his tenure, he served on committees including Privileges and Elections, Courts of Justice, and General Laws, earning a reputation as a conservative advocate.
U.S. House of Representatives : Garrett was elected to represent Virginia's 5th Congressional District in 2016 with the highest vote total in the district's history at that time. In Congress, he served on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Homeland Security Committee, and Education and Workforce Committee, and was a member of the Freedom Caucus. He chose not to seek reelection after two years.
Virginia House of Delegates : Garrett announced his candidacy for the House of Delegates in November 2022 and was elected in the 2023 election to represent the 56th District, which encompasses parts of Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, and Prince Edward counties. He currently serves on the Education Finance committee.
Garrett has received numerous awards recognizing his conservative leadership, including the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Champion of the Free Enterprise Award, the Kentucky Colonel VACA Champion of Justice Award, the American Conservative Union Award for Conservative Excellence, and the National Taxpayers Union Taxpayers Friend Award.
