Biography
Tom Butler is a Republican state senator representing District 2 in the Alabama Senate, which encompasses east Limestone County and western Madison County, including the cities of Athens, Huntsville, and Madison. Born on April 9, 1944, in Huntsville, Alabama, he is a pharmacist and Medicare Health Plan manager by profession. He switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 2011 and resides in Madison with his wife, Karen, a registered nurse; they have two daughters. Notable achievements include sponsoring legislation for two State Veterans Nursing Homes , funding the Veterans Memorial in Birmingham, the Veterans Museum and Archives in Athens, the Veterans Living Legacy at the American Village in Montevallo, and the creation of Alabama’s Veterans Assistance Fund. He chairs the State Governmental Affairs Committee, vice-chairs Transportation and Energy and Madison County Legislation, and serves on Healthcare, Education Policy, Finance and Taxation Education, and Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development committees.
Education
Butler holds a B.S. in chemistry and biology from the University of Alabama, a Certificate in Medical Technology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a pharmacy degree from Auburn University.
Political Experience
Butler served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1982 to 1994 and in the Alabama Senate from 1994 to 2010. He was reelected to the Senate in 2018 and continues to serve. He is active in organizations including Optimist International, North Alabama Health Underwriters Association, Alabama Pharmaceutical Association, Gideons International, American Society for Clinical Pathology, Alabama Republican Executive Committee, Community Free Clinic Board, Calhoun Community College Foundation Board, and University Baptist Church .
