Biography

Tina McKinnor

Tina Simone McKinnor was born on September 30, 1964, in Los Angeles, California. She is the mother of two adult sons and a grandmother. McKinnor is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly, representing District 61, which encompasses portions of the Westside and South Bay regions of Los Angeles County, including Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Gardena, Venice, Marina del Rey, and other communities in the area.

McKinnor first won election to the State Assembly in June 2022 through a special election, defeating fellow Democrat Robert Pullen-Miles in an upset. She was subsequently re-elected in November 2022 and again in November 2024.

Current Positions and Achievements

McKinnor holds several influential leadership roles in the California Legislature:

  • Chair of the Assembly Public Employment and Retirement Committee
  • Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games
  • Chair of the Los Angeles County Legislative Delegation

She serves on additional policy committees including Arts, Entertainment, Sports and Tourism; Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials; Governmental Organization; Privacy and Consumer Protection; and Revenue and Taxation.

McKinnor is a member of the California Legislative Progressive Caucus and has gained national recognition for leading progressive policy initiatives, including legislation that extended collective bargaining and unionization rights to California State Legislature employees . She has also championed legislation on rental housing affordability, environmental protection, and criminal justice reform.

Education and Political Experience

McKinnor holds a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Prior to her election to the State Assembly, she held several significant positions:

  • Operational Director for the California Democratic Party
  • Chief of Staff to several California State Assembly members, including Assemblymembers Steven C. Bradford and Autumn Burke
