Biography
Timi Brown-Powers is a Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives representing District 61 . Born at Beale Air Force Base in California and raised in Des Moines' Beaverdale neighborhood, she resides in Waterloo and works as a therapist employed by MercyOne for over 30 years. First elected in 2014, she is currently serving her fifth term and holds key positions including Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee, as well as membership on committees such as Health and Human Services, Joint Fiscal, Natural Resources, and Veterans Affairs. Notable community involvement includes board roles with the Northeast Iowa Brain Injury Association and Urban Farmers Market, chairing Main Street Economic Vitality, and facilitating Med Fit programs since 1989.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Hoover High School in Des Moines; earned a Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Northern Iowa . Holds certifications as a therapeutic recreation specialist, cancer exercise specialist, breast cancer specialist, Matter of Balance specialist, cardiac/pulmonary exercise specialist, Parkinson’s exercise specialist, and mental health/chronic pain program coordinator.
