Biography
Timothy Lee Walberg was born on April 12, 1951, in Chicago. He is a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, currently serving his ninth term representing Michigan's 5th Congressional District. The district encompasses Branch, Cass, Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe, and St. Joseph Counties, along with portions of Berrien, Calhoun, and Kalamazoo Counties.
Walberg serves as the Dean of the Michigan congressional delegation and holds the designation of Michigan's most conservative Member of Congress based on the American Conservative Union's lifetime score. Prior to his congressional service, he worked as a pastor in Michigan and Indiana for nearly 10 years, served as president of the Warren Reuther Center for Education and Community Impact, and worked as a division manager for Moody Bible Institute.
He is married to Sue and they have been together for over 50 years. They live in Tipton, Michigan, and have three children: Matthew, Heidi, and Caleb. Walberg is also a grandfather of seven and enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, and motorcycle riding.
Education
Walberg earned his Bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University, and attended Taylor University and Fort Wayne Bible College. He completed his Master's degree from Wheaton College Graduate School. To help pay for his college education, he worked as a union steel mill worker.
Political Experience
Walberg was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1983 and served until 1999, gaining a reputation as an advocate for less government spending, lower taxes, and fewer regulations.
He was first elected to the U.S. House in 2006, representing Michigan's 7th district from 2007 to 2009. After a brief absence, he returned to Congress in 2011 and has served continuously since then, representing the 7th district until 2023 and the 5th district thereafter.
In the 119th Congress, Walberg serves as Chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee and sits on the House Committee on Natural Resources. The Center for Effective Lawmaking, a non-partisan collaboration between Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia, recognized him as the most effective member of Michigan's congressional delegation in the 115th Congress and later named him the top Republican legislator on technology issues.
