Biography
Tim Reed is a Republican state senator representing District 7 in the South Dakota Legislature, covering Brookings County. Born on July 13, 1965, in Brookings, South Dakota, he is a lifelong resident, married to Mary, with two children: Maddy and Thomas. A Catholic, Reed has over 19 years of public service experience, including 13 years in Brookings city government—eight as mayor and time on the city council —before serving six years in the South Dakota House of Representatives and transitioning to the Senate.
Notable achievements include passing legislation on mental health care, sexual and domestic abuse victims, child care capacity, bio-product research, support for SDSU, city/county government, and eliminating minor sex trafficking. He served as President of the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board in 2023, chairs the Senate Local Government Committee and the Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment Advisory Board, and is a member of the South Dakota Unified Justice System’s Drug Court Advisory Council. Other roles include the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Legislative Advisory Committee and participation in the 2017 Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development.
