Biography
Tiff Bluemle is a Democratic representative for Chittenden-13 in the Vermont House, serving Burlington's South End. A mother, legislator, teacher, and nonprofit leader, she has dedicated her career to advancing economic opportunities for women, children, and underserved populations. She lives in Burlington with her partner Liz and two sons, having moved to Vermont in 1997 attracted by its progressive politics and support for LGBTQ+ families. Notable achievements include 17 years as executive director of Vermont Works for Women, where she expanded programs five-fold, developed job training for incarcerated women, and built coalitions for workforce policy changes. She established Vermont's first transitional home for women leaving prison, improved conditions at Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility, and launched Change The Story VT in 2015 to promote women's economic well-being through research and employer partnerships. In the legislature since 2020, she serves on the House Appropriations Committee, championing affordable housing, disability and recovery housing, overdose prevention, mental health services, employment protections for sexual harassment victims, child abuse registry reforms, and Vermont’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Education and Political Experience
- Education and Early Career: After graduate school and a year on the Mondale campaign, taught high school history in New York for six years.
- Nonprofit and Advocacy Leadership: Executive director of Vermont Works for Women ; appointed to Next Generation Commission ; boards of Princeton University, Vermont Energy Investment Corporation, Vermont Council on Rural Development, and chaired Public Assets Institute.
